“Greetings to My Sisters and Brothers at St. Stephen’s”
I am so honored and excited to be coming to St. Stephen’s. Everything I hear encourages my spirit more and more. I have met with staff and leaders, gone to Orange training in Atlanta, read or reviewed the books that are shaping your thinking, and reviewed your policies and procedures. Pastor Jeff has been more than gracious in allowing me access so I can hit the ground running when I arrive the first of July.
Bobbie Jones, realtor and St. Stephen’s member, was so generous with her time and directed us to the best housing possibilities in Burke. We selected a one bedroom apartment at Burkeshire. It is reminiscent of the first apartment Bob and I had in Alexandria in 1972. I have learned that I had the honor of officiating at the weddings of two couples at St. Stephen’s.
While all of these have afforded me the opportunity to learn some names I still have a very long way to go. Wearing your name tags for the first several months will be a great help. Speaking of names, I generally ask folks to call me “Pastor Marg” (that is with a hard “g” as in Margaret, not the soft “g” as in Marjorie). Our last name is pronounced like “oo” as in “foots” or “toots”. Two very short names that tend to give people trouble but we will work on that so you will not be hesitant to introduce us to your friends.
You have probably heard about my involvement with the people of South Sudan. I will be more than happy to share my passion with you. Possibly St. Stephen’s would like to include South Sudan as one of their international missions.
St. Stephen’s has a strong history of faithful ministry to the Burke community and beyond. You have a powerful mission, vision, and strategic plan. You have selected strong leaders and hired very talented staff. The needs of our world are tremendous but St. Stephen’s is positioned to make a real difference. Jesus said, “In this world you will have trouble, but take courage because I have overcome the world”. With His Spirit we will overcome the obstacles and run with perseverance the race that is set before us.
We will welcome Pastor Marg on Sunday, July 6 after the 11:00 service. Please plan to attend!
