Prayer for Illumination
Living God, open my heart, mind, and body to experience you in this reading of scripture, that in experiencing you I might grow into someone who brings you honor. Amen.
39And he went throughout Galilee, proclaiming the message in their synagogues and casting out demons.
40 A leper came to him begging him, and kneeling he said to him, ‘If you choose, you can make me clean.’ 41 Moved with pity, Jesus stretched out his hand and touched him, and said to him, ‘I do choose. Be made clean!’42Immediately the leprosy left him, and he was made clean. 43 After sternly warning him he sent him away at once, 44 saying to him, ‘See that you say nothing to anyone; but go, show yourself to the priest, and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded, as a testimony to them.’45 But he went out and began to proclaim it freely, and to spread the word, so that Jesus could no longer go into a town openly, but stayed out in the country; and people came to him from every quarter.
Three things you may notice in today’s passage are Jesus’ healing of a leper, Jesus’ sending the leper to a priest and asking this healing be kept secret, and finally the leper’s failure to do so.
Why do you think Christ asked this to be kept secret?
Why do you imagine the leper did not keep it a secret?
If you’re participating in these daily readings through Facebook, comment to this post with your answer to this question:
Touching lepers in Christ’s day was a big taboo. What could be an analogous thing to that today? Who is untouchable today?
Opportunity for Action
Do something good for someone you don’t like or would rather not associate with—someone who you yourself consider less than desirable or lovable, even untouchable. Keep it a secret.
Offer your own prayer or simply close your time of reflection with the Lord’s Prayer spoken aloud.
