St. Stephen's United Methodist Church

Our mission is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.

From the Senior Pastor
jeff_mickleTaking Note of a Week For the Ages

As I write this note, we have just come  through a week of record-breaking snow, moving us past the all-time record for snowfall in a single season, and the forecast is for more snow tomorrow! It has been a week that many of us will remember for a long time to come. It would be enough to  experience it in our own homes, but here at St. Stephen’s we also experienced this tremendous snow week as we opened our building to be a shelter for homeless persons. (See article in the next column.) That adds even more to the potency of the memory, both for people at St. Stephen’s and for our guests.

Living Last Supper on April 1st

last_supperSt.Stephen's will stage "The Living Last Supper" on Maundy Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 7:30PM. One of Christianity's most significant events was brilliantly portrayed by Leonardo Da Vinci centuries ago: The Last Supper. This Renaissance masterpiece is brought to life by the choirs, orchestra, and actors of St. Stephen’s UMC in Ruth Elaine Schram's remarkable work, "The Living Last Supper."

The music deftly and passionately captures the pathos of the event while, one by one, the disciples speak, expressing their innermost thoughts with brief but poignant monologues that also portray their incredible astonishment at Jesus' assertion that one of them would betray Him that fateful night.

All are welcome to celebrate a communion service to be served by "Jesus" and the assembled twelve for a truly unique and meaningful celebration of the Lord's Supper. Interested in volunteering? Make-up, costumes, lights, props….if you would like to be part of the Living Last Supper crew, please contact Ryan at 703/978-8724x107 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. VBS Volunteers Needed
Did you know that it takes 75-100 volunteers to make VBS a success?  Many of these volunteers are needed for all the "behind the scenes" planning that a great VBS requires.  This year's VBS is scheduled for July 19-23 (Monday - Thursday) and is open to all children age 3 through 6th grade.  This year's theme is "Galactic Blast: A Cosmic Adventure Praising God!"

Contact Lisa Day, Director of Christian Formation, at 703.978.8724, x. 106 or This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it or volunteer online or pick up a registration form in the Gathering Place.

Hypothermia Sheltering and the Big Snow
Written by Pastor Melissa

melissa_porter-millerFor the past 5 years, St. Stephen’s has served as a hypothermia shelter for homeless individuals. We open our doors at 5:30 in the evening, serve dinner, and after breakfast and selecting bag lunch items, the guests leave by 7 am the next morning for jobs, the Lamb’s Center, or other places for their day.

This year that all changed and St. Stephen’s volunteers stepped up with radical hospitality to keep open our doors all day for five days during the major snow storms!! Plus the regular schedule for the other 9 days of our two weeks. The snow brought a few challenges but many more joys as we enjoyed warm fellowship, delicious meals, and good conversation. A number of our guests joined us for the February 7th worship service. Many of them pitched in to shovel the sidewalks around the church. A special thanks to our van drivers and to those who spent extra nights and long hours at church!! Thanks to the gifts of many – everything went smoothly. Thanks especially to all who provided delicious dinners, helped cook and serve meals, and helped clean each day! All together, 111 people from St. Stephen’s served throughout the two weeks of the Hypothermia program. Joining together with Northern Virginia Mennonite, Centreville United Methodist, and Parkwood Baptist, volunteers gave a total of 1,284 hours of their time and energy to extend Christ’s love and hospitality to our guests.

Verse of the Day

Acts 4:10,12
“then know this, you and all the people of Israel: It is by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified but whom God raised from the dead, that this man stands before you healed. Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”
