2011 Ministry Goals

The Ministry Council met in July and identified the following churchwide ministry goals for 2011. Please let the pastors know if you’re interested in working on one or more of these goals to further our ministry!

Radical Hospitality

Promote times for food and fellowship. Encourage congregational potlucks, spread the word to visitors and members about meeting for lunch after the services; start a “St Stephen’s time” at Caribou or wherever.

Empower and energize our efforts to promote church membership and personally connect with visitors.

Develop a team to implement membership efforts, have a goal of 100 new members in 2011; more personal follow-up with visitors, improve the fellowship pad.

Passionate Worship

Increase involvement of children and youth in our worship services.

Share Joys and Concerns as voiced by congregation members.

Increase special events worship opportunities on days other than Sunday (examples: quarterly children’s service, blessing of animals).

Intentional Faith Development

Launch youth ministry renovation plans and implement children’s ministry architecture initiative (Youth Council and Children’s Council).

Provide an Internet-based ministry – study, blog, St. Stephen’s devotional (CERT and Communications committees).

Risk Taking Mission and Service

Become a Certified Green United Methodist Church (e.g., add recycling opportunities in kitchen, have a caulking party, plant a church garden)

Develop ministries in the Hispanic community

Participate in disaster response training – create teams to respond locally and nationally.

Extravagant Generosity

Engage more people in getting involved in church ministries. Find ways to increase “generosity of time” for church ministries; continue to promote the 5 Connect.

Start a “Freecycle” at St. Stephen’s - a barter/recycle board for the church (health supplies, furniture, etc).

Blessing of the Animals Service

On Sunday, October 3, at 5:00 p.m. on the lawn outside St. Stephen's UMC Fellowship Hall, we will offer our very first Blessing of the Animals Service. Creatures that slither, swim, walk, or fly will gather together to form peaceable kingdoms in locations across the world. It isn’t some mass foray but an annual celebration known to some as the Feast Day of St Francis and to others as World Animal Day. All God’s creations reveal something about the nature of God and God’s love. Children, youth, and adults are invited to bring your pets and service animals as all living things gather to give thanks to God for all of creation. Members of the police or fire K-9 Corps are invited to bring their animals. All animals must be securely leashed, caged, or in a carrier. If your pet is aggressive or hyper around people or other animals, please bring him or her in a carrier or crate. If you are not able to bring your pet, you are invited to bring a current photo. For more information, contact the church office at 703.978.8724.

Dinners for Eight - New Season!

Old Friends, New Friends, New Experiences
New Season: Oct 2010 - Jan 2011

St. Stephen’s Dinners for Eight ministry is a delightful way to maintain, renew, and build new friendships. The next Dinners for Eight series begins in early October. Sign up now to enjoy this great opportunity.

The basic plan is for each group of eight people (a mix of singles and couples) to meet four times over a period of four months for dinner at four different homes. The hosts prepare the main course and others in the group bring food to complete the dinner. Flexibility is the key to success. In the past, “dinner” has come to mean brunch after church, pizza party, candlelight dinner, cookout or picnic, so each host can be creative. Your group decides the dates.

Are you new to St. Stephen's? This is a great opportunity to become acquainted with others in your church family. Have you participated before? You already know just how delightful this can be. Have you heard about Dinners for Eight, but not participated? You will definitely enjoy.

Sign up now by contacting Bob and Carol Knachel (703-978-1554 or knachel7@aol.com) or by noting “D48” on the church attendance pad. The signup deadline is Sunday, September 26. Your D48 facilitators will organize the groups and contact you by mail. We look forward to sharing this opportunity. Enjoy.

(Non-Seniors please read this, too - especially paragraph 2!!)

All Seniors are welcome to attend the Seniors Luncheon, the third Tuesday of every month, Sept.-June, 11:15 in the room next to the kitchen. Please bring your own lunch and we will provide beverages, chips, and array of delicious desserts. We have occasional programs, but mostly we are just a sociable group. December and June we have catered lunches. You do not need to be a member of St. Stephens UMC to attend, and if you come, please feel free to invite a friend. Contact Diane Yim 703 978 7521 or yim.cd@verizon.net if you have questions, or to let me know you are coming so that we set up sufficient seating.

We would also welcome anyone in the non-Senior category to help on our Coordinating Committee. This would only involve a few hours on the luncheon date to help with set up, clean up, to make a dessert, and occasionally give someone a ride. We on the Coordinating Committee all started before we became Seniors, and now that we have all become Seniors, we would appreciate help from some younger people!
