Welcome, Pastor Abi And Pastor Drew

A special reception to welcome Pastors Drew and Abi and their families will be held on Sunday, July 14, in the fellowship hall, following the 11:00 worship service. Everyone is invited. Refreshments will be served.

This month, we welcome two new full-time associate pastors to St. Stephen’s Church. Rev. Abi Foerster will serve as the Associate Pastor for Children’s Ministry and Connect with New People; Rev. Drew VanDyke Colby will serve as the Associate Pastor for Youth and Outreach. They will both participate with Pastor Jeff in worship leadership and pastoral care.

Pastor Abi was raised in a Christian home in Arlington, attending an Episcopal Church as she grew up. She graduated in 1990 with a B.A. in history from the University of Virginia. In 1993, she felt called to become an ordained minister through the United Methodist Church. She served Christ United Methodist Church in Fairfax Station during its early years while she attended Wesley Seminary, graduating with her Master of Divinity degree (magna cum laude) in 1998, at which point she became the full-time associate pastor for Christ UMC. In July 2000, she was appointed to serve as the Alexandria District Program Coordinator, where she served until July 2003. From 2003 until 2010, she served as the senior pastor of Arlington UMC, a multi-staff, multi-ethnic congregation. In 2010, she was granted family leave of absence to care for her husband and daughter who were both facing medical problems. She has served part-time as the Minister for Children at The Vine UMC in Dunn Loring since 2011. Now she is ready to reenter the full-time itinerant ministry. She brings a wealth of experience across a range of fields, including crisis counselor, church planter, co-founder of the Jeremiah Project, program developer and children’s minister. She is currently enrolled in a Master’s degree program at George Mason for early childhood education, curriculum and instruction for diverse young learners. Her first big project at St. Stephen’s will be our Vacation Bible School, July 14-19. She will preach on Sunday, July 21. She will work with the following committees: Children and Family Ministry Council, Christian Education Resource Team, Evangelism Committee, Fellowship Committee, and Preschool Committee.  She is married to Lacy Lusk, a copy editor for The Washington Post sports section.  They have one daughter, Sophia, who is seven.

Pastor Drew grew up in a home where both parents were United Methodist pastors. He has lived in various places in Virginia, spending most of his formative years in Richmond. He graduated in 2007 with a B.A. from William and Mary. In 2009, he received a Master of Music in vocal performance from Shenandoah University. Subsequently he felt called into ordained ministry, and has just graduated from Wesley Seminary in May, 2013, with his Master of Divinity (magna cum laude).  Drew brings a wide range of experience to St. Stephen’s, in music, Christian education, and youth ministry. He has served most recently as a ministry intern at Rising Hope Mission UMC on the Route One corridor of Fairfax County.  Upon his graduation from Wesley, he received two of the eight awards given to the class of 2013: the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts Award and the Student Council Award for Outstanding Service to the Community. He brings a passion for service with the poor, reaching youth and young adults, and cross-cultural ministry. His first big project at St. Stephen’s will be the Jeremiah Project junior high mission, July 7-13. He will preach on August 4. He will be working with the following committees: Church and Society Committee, Congregational Care Committee, Outreach Committee, and Youth Council. Drew is married to Allison Colby, a physician assistant.
