Invitation to Join Courage Quest from Pastor Jiyeon

February 16, 2021

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The greatest blessings that I’ve received in my life and my faith journey is family, especially my parents who are faithful and dedicated to God’s Church. They became a true example of Christian life and Jesus’ disciple to my older brother and me. Of course, it does not mean that their life was perfect and they were always happy. Like your life and my life, they also have gone through a lot of struggles and challenges – some of them were powerful enough to shake my family’s faith and relationship with God.

How did my family overcome those times? Well… we just endured and waited until God showed us a right path to follow. We literally cried out and asked for God’s help and guidance. In the storm of life, my family was reminded of the truth that God created us and had a perfect plan for us.

Now, I am a pastor. Again, it does not mean that my life is perfect and I am always happy. I still see and face obstacles and challenges in my life and ministry. A big difference in me now is that I have COURAGE to stop and take a deep breath to face a wall in front of me, climb up a mountain or wait until the storm passes by. I know that “My strength comes from God (Psalm 121:2a, MSG)” and “The battle belongs to the Lord (1 Samuel 17:47, MSG).” Therefore, I no longer fear. I believe that the Lord, who goes before me, will always be with me and will not fail me or forsake me (Deuteronomy 31:8).

In 2020, the Children’s and Family Ministries at St. Stephen’s UMC had to cancel our annual overnight retreat ‘Courage Quest’ for children in 3rd-6th grade and their parents. As we still deal with the deadly virus, we offer a modified outdoor program on Saturday, March 20, 2021, from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. at St. Stephen’s.

Please find more detailed information below. This program is designed specifically for tweens and at least one of their parents to experience together, in partnership with the church. Let us gather to listen to one another and dream together about what kind of person your child wants to be and what kind of person and Christian you hope your child to be as we learn about a courageous boy, David (1 Samuel 17). I believe this time enables God’s young children and yourself to trust in God and live courageously!

May your family’s life be filled with God’s abundant blessings and everlasting love.

Peace,
Pastor Jiyeon Kim, St. Stephen’s United Methodist Church
