As children reach this next developmental stage they are learning the social skills needed to play and work with other children all while testing their physical, behavioral, and emotional limits. With this in mind, St. Stephen’s has structured many of their weekly opportunities – like Sunday School, Preschool, the Cherub Choir, and Godly Play – so that parents can feel confident that their “big kids” will experience a safe, structured environment that also supports children’s exploration, initiative, curiosity, and enjoyment.

Rites of Passage:

Devo Kits for 3-year-olds:
It is our greatest desire that in these early years, children will also develop a sense of wonder that God created the world and each precious child. To encourage this faith development, each January parents with children that will turn 3 years old during the next calendar year are given a Devotional Kit during worship that is filled with a variety of tools to help children and families grow in faith together. This past year, families received a Bible, a one-year devotional book, a prayer cube, and suggestions for serving.

Weekly Connect:

Sunday School: classes are offered weekly from 9:45 – 10:45 am for children from preschool through high school (and parents too, see p. 2 for more details) and are a great way for your child to make friends and be challenged to grow in their faith. At St. Stephen’s UMC, we use curriculum developed by Cokesbury Publishers called Deep Blue. Each week incorporates Bible stories, hands-on activities, crafts, media, and games into a full faith experience for children. Our goal is to help children grow their faith by leaps and bounds and is based on our theme verse from 2 Thessalonians 1:3, “Your faithfulness is growing by leaps and bounds, and the love that all of you have for each other is increasing.” (CEB) Classes are team taught with two adults per class. Cherub Choir: The Cherub Choir is a fun, inter-active way to introduce young children to music. This group is led by Teryl Pomeroy who has a passion for this age group and has been involved in leading children for 20 plus years. The choir rehearses on Sunday Mornings, 9:30 – 10 am during the school year 3 years – Kindergarten) MORE

Godly Play: Following the children’s moment, children are escorted by a volunteer to Room C43 for a Bible story, Scripture verse and directed play.

Preschool: St. Stephen’s UMC Preschool offers a safe, caring environment for children first away from their family.  MORE
